My strategy resource is a website that I recently discovered. It is literactive.com and is a wealth of games, activities and more for the emerging reader. There are animated readings, a phonics reading program, over 100 learning activities, black line masters, poetry, picture books and and ESL link.
The power of this strategy is that there is something for every emerging reader. Every link on the site has different levels so that each student's needs can be met individually. The other powerful advantage to this site is that there is immediate feedback which is so important for students today. We can talk and talk and talk, but if the student can work hands on and get immediate feedback for their effort, they retain the knowledge better and faster.
In the classroom this can be used on individual computers so that a student's individual needs are met with the activity the teacher has chosen. It can also be used in small groups around a computer or as a whole group activity with the use of a smartboard. The blackline masters can be used as well to follow up and expand the learning.
